Case Studies \ Railway Simulation
Business Today was tasked with developing a series of simulations (Management & Operations) that engaged Transnet Freight rail employees, at all levels, to run an integrated freight rail operation to help them better understand the needs of their customers, and how they can positively and negatively impact the bottom line of the business.
The simulation enables them to analyse, plan and implement process improvement activities within the railway business. This understanding helps transcend traditional notions about functional barriers and ultimately leads to improved decision-making and problem solving, and therefore improved company performance.
The delegates gained the following learning outcomes:
- How to control rolling stock and scheduling to ensure a balanced network.
- Preparation and interpretation of railway orientated financial statements.
- Allocation of rolling stock to maintenance and operations to ensure long-term stability.
- Management of resources to ensure ongoing safe operations.
- Preparation and implementation of integrated train plans.
- Appropriate capital expenditure investment to ensure ongoing sustainable operations.
- Developing an awareness of the different components of business acumen in the railway industry.
- Managing the complete value chain to ensure a balanced and sustainable performance.
Delegates experienced first-hand, through experiential learning that their contribution affects the business and the impact on the bottom line.
